I was using my iBook G4 (Tiger w/ latest updates) when it suddenly crashed. The screen went black - not black like when it's off, but black like you're watching a dark scene in a movie. I couldn't get out of it, so I turned it off and tried booting up again. It worked but crashed a second time minutes later. After attempting to reboot a second time, random colors came up on the screen - fine pinstripes of pink, green, blue, etc. Now, after several tries, all that comes up is that dark black screen. In addition, the fan goes crazy, blowing air really fast out the back (near the screen hinge) and making a grating, vibrating noise. The power button does not respond, so the only way to turn it off is to take out the battery. It sounds like it's a hardware problem - turning it on with the Tiger disk inserted doesn't seem to help. Should I just bring it to an Apple store? On the plus side, maybe if I wait they'll replace it with a new Intel iBook. Haha probably not...Thanks in advance for the help, sorry for the long description. iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

IBook G4, but not in 480mbit mode. Other similar devices like the 1TB Seagate Freeagent work in hi-speed mode on my USB 2.0 ports and hub, but I don't have another machine with USB 2.0 to test the Acomdata on. I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.6. #6 I have that same "hi-speed" USB 2.0 Acomdata 320GB external hard disk, and I can't get it to operate above 12mbit/s on my iBook G4 either. It won't connect to my hi-speed USB 2.0 powered hub at all. It will work when plugged directly into my iBook G4, but not in 480mbit mode. Other similar devices like the 1TB Seagate Freeagent work in hi-speed mode on my USB 2.0 ports and hub, but I don't have another machine with USB 2.0 to test the Acomdata on. I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.6. Try completely erasing the drive and re-format it using Disk Utility. Format it to DOS (FAT-32). That's a long shot but it may work. I suspect those particular AcomData drives have defective firmware and\or drive electronics and probably should have been recalled or returned. Not much you can about that....Another thing you might try: Remove the drive from its case and place it in an external USB 2.0 case. That has a better chance of working.Regards. Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question. I would like to add alt-tags to my photos. I tried downloading and running Rage's iWeb SEO Tool, but it froze while publishing and then messed up my entire site (so much that I had to delete my site's directory and recopy it from my back-up drive). Tried it a second time and it froze again, so I deleted the program. Does anyone know a simple way to do this in iWeb '09, or freeware that's better than iWeb SEO Tool? Also ... is there a way to add keywords to each page by using an HTML snippet in the heading? Does anyone have the code for that? Key TakeawaysI’m the proud owner of an Apple iBook that’s old enough to drink, and I still love it. I use the iBook regularly for writing, and even after all this time, it’s a practical but limited computer (as long as you don't want fast internet). There are no email or other notifications to distract you when you’re working on the iBook. Lifewire/Sascha Brodsky Apple has added a splash of color to its new iMac lineup, but the company’s dearly departed clamshell iBook G3 still wins as the most colorful and cheerful computer ever made. I own a clamshell iBook, as it’s known, and it still runs as smoothly as ever, more than two decades after it was released. I use it regularly for writing and even after all this time, it’s a practical, albeit limited, computer. The iBook was introduced in 1999, soon after the then newly released iMac. The iBook G3 has a PowerPC G3 CPU, USB, Ethernet, modem ports, and an optical drive. I love it.“The clamshell iBook looks like no other laptop that’s ever been designed.” Thinking Very Different The clamshell iBook looks like no other laptop that’s ever been designed. I have the blueberry-colored model, and it resembles a giant cough drop that was squashed by a truck. Just looking at it puts me in a better mood. Examples of the iBook are on exhibition at the London Design Museum and the Yale University Art Gallery. MacBooks and most laptops made these days are all minimalist, sharp-edged sculptures of glass and aluminum. They are serious tools to get serious work done. On the other hand, the iBook looks like a device you might do something you enjoy with it. Lifewire/Sascha Brodsky My favorite part of the iBook is the giant translucent carrying handle that extends out of the back. When you tote this baby around, there’s no confusing you for another office drone. In fact, it sort of resembles a giant toy laptop. Of course, the carrying handle on the iBook was necessary because the thing is enormous by modern standards. It’s 1.8 × 13.5 × 11.6 inches and weighs 6.7 pounds. On the other hand, the extra weight, combined with the handle, makes it handy for doing bicep curls. But I get real work done on the iBook even decades later. It’s great for word processing and spreadsheets. If you need to take a break from all that number-crunching, every iBook of that era comes preloaded with Bugdom, a game that is just fun enough to keep you amused, while not something that’s going to turn into a giant time suck.
