Ozark Sign in to your CBR account Netflix's Ozark garnered a great amount of critical acclaim and a devoted fan base over four seasons. But despite its many accolades, Ozark was often compared to AMC's Breaking Bad. While the comparison made sense since both series explored the dark side of the American dream and featured complex, multi-layered characters, the Netflix show created its own unique identity before Ozark's controversial ending in 2022. In Ozark, Location Was Everything The most obvious difference between Ozark and Breaking Bad was the location. While Breaking Bad was set in the sunny desert of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ozark took place in central Missouri. The desert gave Breaking Bad a gritty noir feel, while the remote wilderness lent Ozark a more atmospheric and moody feeling. The Ozark mountains provided a beautiful, yet eerie backdrop for the show and the tight-knit, rather strange community therein added to the sense of isolation and unease throughout the Netflix series. Ozark's Marty Byrde Was More Sympathetic Than Breaking Bad's Heisenberg Another key difference between Ozark and Breaking Bad was the arc of its protagonists. Walter White and Jesse Pinkman both actively sought out the world of crime, and when given the opportunity chose to go deeper into the criminal underworld. Marty Byrde, on the other hand, was looking for an out at every turn. Breaking Bad was more concerned with the psychological transformation that took place in Walter White and other characters, while Ozark focused on external factors -- how the Byrde family navigated a complex web of rival criminal organizations, corrupt politicians and local law enforcement. Marty entered the world of crime differently than Walter White. Walter knew what he was getting into is dangerous and, when he went on a ride-along with his DEA agent brother-in-law Hank Schrader, experienced how easy it is to get caught. Marty thought that money laundering was something harmless that could be done from a laptop without ever meeting anyone. When Marty was forced to take a life, he became depressed and riddled with guilt. Conversely, Walter adopted the Heisenberg persona and began

SPOILER ALERT, obviously. The biggest development of Ozark season 3 came in its final moments, where Marty and Wendy Byrde reluctantly go down to Mexico with Helen Pierce to meet with drug-dealer Omar Navarro. They were greeted with a shocking welcome, as almost immediately a gunman shoots Helen in the head, splattering blood and brain onto Marty and Wendy. Navarro tells him that he made the choice to continue with the Byrdes instead of his former attorney. But what will that mean moving forward?Elsewhere, Ruth has joined with Darlene Snell in starting up a heroin operation with the help of the KC mob; the FBI is keeping a watchful eye on the Byrde’s running of the Missouri Belle casino; and the family is reeling following the death of Wendy’s brother Ben.Who is in the Ozark cast? The duo leading Ozark throughout its entire has been Jason Bateman and Laura Linney as Marty and Wendy Byrde. Out for far too long, until the show is a shell of what made it so good in the first place. Will there be a fourth season of Ozark? Yes. Netflix announced in an official statement that Ozark would wrap up with a supersized, 14-episode, two-part, final season (previous seasons have been 10 episodes each). "We're so happy Netflix recognized the importance of giving Ozark more time to end the Byrdes' saga right," executive producer and showrunner Chris Mundy said in Netflix's statement. "It's been such a great adventure for all of us—both on screen and off—so we're thrilled to get the chance to bring it home in the most fulfilling way possible."Subscribe to Men's HealthBack in that Collider interview, Bateman revealed months earlier that Mundy was already plotting out a fourth season. “I know [showrunner] Chris Mundy and his team are hard at work figuring out what that fourth season would be if that official pick-up lands,” he said. In a video posted to YouTube, Netflix announced that the first part of Ozark Season 4 would be landing on January 21, 2022. The video features the voices of Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner), Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery), Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney), and Omar Navarro (Felix Solis), all of whom will presumably play very large roles as Ozark begins its final season. Is there a trailer yet?Not yet. But the above video should be enough to get your Ozark juices flowing a bit. Who will be in the fourth season's cast?We don't know which new characters could be added for a potential third season. But given the way the third season closed out, we can expect to see many of the regulars return once again. Netflix's official announcement said that Bateman (as Marty Byrde), Laura Linney (as Wendy Byrde), Julia Garner (as Ruth Langmore), Sofia Hublitz (as Charlotte Byrde), Skylar Gaertner (as Jonah Byrde), Charlie Tahan (as Wyatt Langmore), and Lisa Emery (as Darlene Snell) would all be returning. Felix Solis, who plays drug lord Omar Navarro, has his voice in the date announcement teaser, leading us to believe that he will also be returning. And given the way Season 3 ended, we have to assume that Jessica Frances Dukes (who plays Special Agent Maya Miller) will also be involved.Ozark was never imagined as a show that would last forever. As Bateman alluded in that same Collider interview, Ozark has never been intended as a show that would last for a decade or anywhere close. If his idea of 3-4-5 seasons for Ozark becomes reality, that means that a fourth season, theoretically could be the end—or at least could begin to set up the end. Jackson Davis/NetflixBateman
